Lies about leadership that everybody has accepted

What you’re reading in books about good leadership is not true. Story upon story about how a good leader also has a “good character”, integrity, how they are compassionate and honorable, are fake. That is the difficult, hard truth. A good and efficient leader is primarily defined by one thing – will and the readiness of others to follow them. A good leader has to have the characteristics that inspire people to follow them.

– Hitler is the best example of what I’m talking about. Just take into consideration his leadership power and compare it with his character. He was not exactly a good man, but he was extremely capable of inciting people to follow him – writes Joe Caruso, the author of The Power of Losing Control, a very interesting study which reminds what’s changeable in life, and what’s not.

Having put a good leader in the context of a leader who doesn’t necessarily have to have socially acceptable characteristics, Caruso cites two essential traits that this kind of leader needs to have.

First, they have to know what they want. “They have to have a vision,” Caruso says. They have to present that vision to other in a way that inspires others to support the leader. Their followers thereby may have to change their opinions and behavior in order to make the leader’s vision come true.

Second, a good leader should form a group of individuals who will take part in the process of realization of what the leader wants.

– Note how I didn’t say “team.” Team work is an overrated concept of good leadership – Caruso claims and adds:

– Believe it or not, the members of the group who will take the leader to the realization of their vision do not have to get along or cooperate well or work together. Of course it’s excellent if the leader knows how to create a team, but it’s not essential.

According to Caruso, the harsh truth is that good leadership doesn’t concern personality or personal traits too much. What it concerns is primarily the knowledge of how relations between people in fact function and that is the “animalistic” side. A good leader knows what pushes people forward.

– Primarily focus on said two things (what you want and getting a group together) if you want to be efficient. Then, do everyone a favor and be a leader with integrity and good thoughts – recommends Joe Caruso, world-renowned business adviser.
