Masdar and Taaleri commission Cibuk 2 wind farm – Largest wind energy hub in Serbia and Western Balkans

Masdar and Taaleri Energia have commissioned the 154 MW Cibuk 2 wind farm in South Banat, creating, alongside the existing 158 MW Cibuk 1, the largest wind energy hub in Serbia and the Western Balkans.

Cibuk 2 is located near the first wind farm, approximately 40 kilometers from Belgrade. Together, the two projects have a combined installed capacity of 312 MW and can generate enough electricity to power around 178,800 households. The total value of foreign direct investment in these two projects exceeds EUR 500 million.

The Cibuk 2 wind farm comprises 22 Nordex turbines, with an expected annual electricity generation of up to 336,000 MWh. According to the investors, this output should be sufficient to supply approximately 80,000 households while avoiding around 311,200 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

More than 1,000 people, including employees, subcontractors, and project management staff, were engaged in the construction of Cibuk 2, with the majority coming from the South Banat region.

The wind farm is jointly owned by Masdar and Taaleri Energia on a 50:50 basis and was developed in partnership with New Energy Solutions.

Masdar planning over 200 MW more in Serbia

Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic assessed that the completion of Cibuk 2 represented a significant contribution to the decarbonization of Serbia’s energy system and the enhancement of its energy independence.

As she noted, Masdar’s two wind farms in Serbia, with a combined capacity of 312 MW, currently account for approximately 25% of the country’s total wind and solar capacity.

– The Cibuk 1 wind farm marked an early stage in the development of wind energy capacity in Serbia, whereas Cibuk 2 is a project that stands out within a more mature and dynamic market phase – said Djedovic Handanovic.

Masdar currently holds a development portfolio in Serbia exceeding 200 MW, comprising solar power plants, wind farms, and battery energy storage systems.

The company states that Serbia possesses significant long-term potential for renewable energy development, with plans to build approximately 3.5 GW of new wind and solar capacity by 2030, aiming for renewables to account for 45% of electricity generation.

Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, stated that the launch of Cibuk 2 marked a major milestone for the company’s presence in Serbia.

– With over 300 MW now installed within the Cibuk hub and a robust development portfolio in Serbia, we are creating a platform for further growth across the wider Central and Eastern European region – said Al Ramahi.

Kai Rintala, Managing Director of Taaleri Energia, assessed that Cibuk 2 represented confirmation of the company’s long-term commitment to the region and a foundation for expanding its renewable energy portfolio in Eastern Europe.
