China building 25.5-km sea bridge – Structure to contain 67,000 tons of steel

The construction of the longest cross-sea bridge in northeast China has reached a significant milestone - the main section of the structure, more than 11 kilometers long, is fully connected.

The Dalian-Changhai Bridge, which will be 25.5 kilometers long, is scheduled to open to traffic in 2029.

The connection of the main section was completed after 423 days of construction, ten days ahead of schedule. During the construction, 3,431 piles were driven, while about 67,000 tons of steel have been installed in the structure so far.

The bridge will span the Lichangshan Strait and connect Dachangshan Island in Changhai County with the mainland at the Port of Pikou in Pulandian County.

Changhai is China’s only island border county, and residents have been largely dependent on maritime traffic until now.

Ferry lines are suspended for more than 60 days a year due to high tides, strong winds and dense fog. Even when weather conditions permit navigation, ferries are not available 24 hours a day.

Ending dependence on ferries

This traffic isolation has made daily movement difficult for residents for years, but it also represents an obstacle to the local economy.

With the completion of the Changhai bridge, Changhai should gain a permanent road connection with mainland China, which would reduce its long-standing dependence on ferries.

After the main part of the structure is connected, the works are to enter the next phase, while the completion of the entire project and the opening of the bridge to traffic is planned for 2029.
