Ahead of the atomic turn, the Vinca Institute and the Novi Sad FTN are preparing experts – Development of the Nuclear Energy Systems program is imminent

In recent years, the Serbian government has increasingly advocated an energy turn for our country, in which nuclear energy should play a significant role in the coming decades, which would include the amendment and adoption of several acts, the construction of necessary facilities and the training of appropriate personnel. A step towards the latter was taken by the Vinca Institute and the Faculty of Technical Sciences (FTN), which signed a memorandum, which, among other things, envisages joint work on the development and preparation of the master’s academic study program “Nuclear Energy Systems”. The program will include the development of modern teaching content and laboratory activities, the application of simulation and digital approaches in teaching, as well as the active involvement of researchers and experts from the Vinca Institute in teaching processes. In this way, students will, as announced after the signing of the memorandum, be enabled to acquire specialized knowledge and practical competencies in accordance with modern technological and industrial requirements, with direct involvement in scientific research projects and practical work.

As indicated, this means that a special focus of cooperation will be directed at the development of human resources in the field of advanced energy systems, providing support to the energy transition and developing safe, intelligent and sustainable energy solutions for the future of Serbia.

The signing of the memorandum, it is added, confirms the joint commitment of the two leading scientific and educational institutions to the development of national competencies in the fields of energy, digitalization, security of critical infrastructures, sustainable development and advanced technological systems.

The memorandum also envisages intensifying cooperation within domestic and international educational and research networks, including the preparation and implementation of joint projects through the Euratom and Horizon Europe programs, as well as other relevant international initiatives. Cooperation with international organizations and networks, such as the European Nuclear Education Network (ENEN) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), will also be of particular importance.

Dean of the Faculty of Technical Sciences, Prof. Dr. Boris Dumnic, emphasized that “Serbia’s energy future will not be built only through technology and infrastructure, but above all through knowledge and people,” emphasizing that the partnership between FTN and the Vinca Institute represented an important step in the development of new generations of experts who will have the capacity to lead the energy and technological transformations of society.
