Serbia could be ready to build nuclear power plant by 2032 – French Development Agency interested in financing studies in first phase of nuclear program

Serbia could be ready to build a nuclear power plant by 2032, said Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic, who spoke with the heads of subgroups within the Interdepartmental Expert Working Group for examining the justification of the approach to the development of nuclear energy. The topic of the conversation was the development of studies in the first phase of the nuclear program.

Djedovic Handanovic stated that the Interdepartmental Expert Working Group consisted of more than 20 experts from different institutions, divided into subgroups covering 19 infrastructure issues prescribed by the International Atomic Energy Agency, the relevant ministry announced.

She also reminded that the Preliminary Technical Study on the Peacetime Use of Nuclear Energy had been completed the previous year and that they were now in the first phase of the nuclear program.

– Within the subgroups, most of the project tasks have been defined in this phase and now it is important to be efficient and to start announcing procurement procedures in a short time for the preparation of studies that will cover the topics addressed in the first phase, which will be carried out by institutions and experts from the country and abroad – she said.

The Minister added that the French Development Agency had expressed interest in financing the preparation of studies that would cover some of the topics in the first phase of the nuclear program, namely human resources development, location selection, involvement of domestic industry, and public information, which would be carried out in cooperation with the French company EDF.

– The goal is to complete the preparation of all studies that are necessary for the Government to make an informed decision on the implementation of the nuclear program by the middle of next year. In this way, by 2032, Serbia could be ready for the selection of technology and entering the construction contracting process, so that after 2040, the nuclear power plant could be on the grid – stated Djedovic Handanovic.
