The village of Sopotnica, located on the slopes of Mount Jadovnik, has become one of the most important tourist destinations in the municipality of Prijepolje.

This protected natural monument records a record number of visitors year after year, and data shows that the number of categorized accommodation capacities in this area has increased by an incredible 300%.

The main asset of this region are the magnificent waterfalls, after which the Sopotnica River got its name - after the “sopot” (archaic for “whisper” – translator’s note) of water that freely falls from a height of more than 20 meters.

Waterfalls and fishponds

The breathtaking view is just the beginning of the story of this “paradise on earth,” as described by locals and tourists.

At the foot of the waterfall, the Vukasinovic family has been nurturing the tradition of trout farming for decades. Vojo Vukasinovic, who dreamed of having his own fish pond as a boy while fishing on the Lim River, now proudly highlights the quality of his fish.

– There is no better fish in Serbia, because there is no better water than that of the Sopotnica. It is protected here, clean, clear and drinkable – says Vojo. He explains that the taste of the fish directly depends on the high level of oxygen and purity of the mountain water, which sets the Sopotnica apart from all other fish ponds.

Several other households have followed in his footsteps, and the development of rural tourism has also been supported by state institutions.

The Ministry of Tourism has subsidized the expansion of accommodation capacities, while the Ministry of Environmental Protection has invested in the development of tourist infrastructure within the natural monument itself.

Gastronomic delight and infrastructure challenges

In addition to natural beauty, tourists also come to Sopotnica for its authentic local cuisine.

The most sought-after buckwheat pies, homemade pies, prosciutto, but also homemade jams, ajvar and winter preserves that hardworking housewives prepare themselves are on the tables.

However, despite the great progress and the paved road leading to the village, locals point out that infrastructure is still the biggest challenge.

The further development of rural tourism directly depends on additional investments in roads and supporting facilities, so that this pearl of the Prijepolje region can accommodate all those who want to experience the peace of Jadovnik.

Sopotnica is proof that the combination of natural beauty, family business and state support can revive a Serbian village, and judging by the growth trend, the best years for this natural monument are yet to come.
