EPS to be operator of future nuclear power plant

Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS) should be the operator of the future nuclear power plant, and as the largest energy company in the country, it has the development capacity for that role, and the focus should now be on educating future personnel, said Dusan Zivkovic, CEO of EPS, at the beginning of the “Energy, Projects, Safety” expert conference on Zlatibor.

He emphasized that EPS, through the decarbonization process, understood that a new era was coming and that the base energy had to be something else. Zivkovic emphasized that countries that owned nuclear power plants were among the most developed and that Serbia needed to find its place and space in that technology.

– The most significant, strategic investment is the construction of the reversible hydroelectric power plant “Bistrica” and that project is progressing. We have received the location requirements for the power plant, which is the foundation for further development of the project, and at the beginning of next week we will announce the first tenders for infrastructure works – said Zivkovic.

The head of EPS pointed out that gas was certainly a transitional energy source, and that there was intensive discussion about a gas power plant in Nis. He reminded that EPS had had very good results in the preceding three years, both financially and in production.

– This is the result of the work of the team I lead, of all the employees. EPS is today a stable, profitable company with clear and decisive development plans. In these three years, EPS has grown by 426 new megawatts. We completed block B3 in Kostolac and provided 350 MW of new, safe, baseload power. We also put into operation our first wind farm in Kostolac, with a capacity of 66 MW, and the 10 MW “Petka” solar power plant. We have also completed the desulfurization plants in TENT A and TENT B. Now all of our large thermal capacities have drastically reduced sulfur dioxide emissions, by as much as 30 times, and we have invested significant funds in environmental protection. We have completed the revitalization of the reversible HPP “Bajina Basta” and ensured energy security for the coming decades. By renovating the largest hydropower plants, we have gained a new 100 MW and in total, almost 550 megawatts of new power have been added to the grid in the last few years – said Zivkovic.

Speaking about the challenges, the CEO of EPS pointed out that there should be insistence on a solution for the CBAM tax for energy produced from RES, because in this way, 550 MW from wind farms could generate up to 2,000 GWh of annual production and generate up to 250 million euros in energy export revenue. Zivkovic pointed out that the current position of energy from the region was uncompetitive in the EU, and that the EU itself often lacked energy.
