– I am proud that the largest environmental project in this part of Europe has been completed and that our largest thermal capacities now meet all environmental standards, not only domestic, but also European. Such plants are already operating successfully in Kostolac B and TENT A, and now sulfur dioxide emissions will be drastically reduced here by as much as 30 times. In addition, emissions of powdery substances are below the prescribed limits. Here in Obrenovac alone, more than EUR 420 million have been invested in the construction of the desulfurization system at TENT A and TENT B. In this way, we are improving the air quality not only in Obrenovac, but also in Belgrade and its surroundings – said Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic, Minister of Mining and Energy, at the ceremony marking the completion of the construction of this significant environmental project.
Dusan Zivkovic, CEO of EPS, pointed out that the investment was worth around EUR 250 million and that the facility had been successfully completed with Japanese partners, the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries company that had carried out the work, and domestic companies.
– The ODG facility has been equipped with the most modern equipment from renowned manufacturers and is a technology for flue gas desulfurization using a wet process that uses lime. The by-product of this process is gypsum, which is already being produced and is of Euro quality. The expected annual production of gypsum is around 200,000 tons, and thus we are strengthening EPS’s capacity in the circular economy. It is particularly important for us that we have extended the service life and energy efficiency of one of the pillars of our power system – said Zivkovic.
