Hydrogen as the fuel of the future – What it can replace and where Serbia stands in this field

The instability of prices of traditional fossil fuels on the global market and the dependence on them have reopened the question of their alternatives. Many see hydrogen as the fuel of the future, and the representative of the Cluster for the Development of Hydrogen Projects in Serbia, Aleksandar Latinovic, tells the N1 portal that this is because hydrogen is a medium for storing energy and because there is currently no better idea of how we will store energy seasonally.

– Hydrogen has been recognized as the energy source of the future because it represents a kind of storage of electrical energy, and this is important due to variable energy sources, such as wind and sun, and the seasonal redistribution of these sources. Especially solar energy, which is present during the part of the year when electricity consumption is lower – he explains.

The idea, as Latinovic says, is that when we have a surplus of electricity from these sources - we produce hydrogen, store it and use it as an energy source during the year when there are not enough variable energy sources.

– The moment Europe switches to renewable energy sources, there will be a problem of how to store energy and how to use it again later. Hydrogen comes in as the only currently recognized way of long-term energy storage. We already have reversible hydroelectric power plants and battery storage, but battery storage is a daily energy storage, and reversible hydroelectric power plants can be monthly, but we do not have seasonal storage - we do not have the ability to transfer energy from summer to winter. All EU strategies recognize that the medium for this storage should be hydrogen, there is currently nothing else that could compete with hydrogen as a seasonal energy storage – Latinovic points out.
