The Spanish company CAF has signed a contract with Srbijavoz for the delivery of 30 electric multiple units (EMUs) for the needs of BG Voz suburban railway in Belgrade, the Basque-based company announced. The total value of the contract exceeds EUR 300 million, and the agreement also includes full maintenance services for the delivered trains over a period of two years.

The contract will deliver three-unit electric multiple units based on CAF’s Civity platform, intended for suburban and regional rail traffic. Each unit has a total capacity of 546 passengers, including 204 seats, and is designed for a maximum operating speed of up to 120 kilometers per hour.

According to the statement, the trains will have aluminum bodies and will be equipped with two bogies per wheel, which is a configuration adapted to achieve optimal acceleration and braking performance on lines with frequent stops. The internal organization of the space includes six multifunctional zones per train, with the possibility of accommodating up to 18 bicycles, which additionally responds to the needs of modern urban and suburban transport.

It is planned that the new trains will be deployed on the BG Voz network, which includes 35 stations distributed on four main and three complementary lines. This network connects the central parts of Belgrade with suburban termini, including Ovca, Batajnica and Resnik, with further extensions to Mladenovac and Lazarevac. The introduction of the new trains aims to replace the existing, outdated rolling stock and improve the reliability and quality of service in suburban rail transport.

This is CAF’s second contract in the Serbian railway market, following the project to supply 30 trams for urban transport in Belgrade, which was contracted in 2009.

The contract was signed after several months of preparations and negotiations at the state and competent institutions level. A working group was previously formed to analyze the technical and commercial aspects of the project and participate in the preparation of contract documentation.
