How battery storages reduce costs and increase energy independence of companies

When they own battery storage with a solar power plant on site, business entities become more resistant to changes in electricity prices in the coming years. A high-quality battery system after 15 years of use, will retain 60% of the initial performance, when operating with one cycle per day.

Battery storage for self-consumption in commercial and industrial facilities is applied:
  • for "balancing" the consumption curve, when consumption from the network is higher
  • to use the surplus of energy produced from the Sun, by storing it in batteries
  • to use energy stored in the batteries when the output of the solar power plant is lower
  • the battery is charged at a lower tariff, discharged in consumption at a higher tariff
  • as backup power for critical consumers.

Active buyers and energy storage

Key factors for decision makers, when considering inclusion in the new model of active buyer, are generated savings and additional revenues from the sale of surplus electricity, as well as the period of return on investment in new energy equipment. Active customers have the possibility of simultaneously generating more income with the savings they achieve, when in addition to the solar power plant, they own an electricity storage facility. Instead of just taking power from the grid, active customers can be almost independent for hours. Active customers sell their excess electricity to the aggregator, or an electricity trader. In addition, they can sell energy from battery storage on several markets: for arbitration and for support services. Auxiliary services from which they can additionally generate income can be achieved through capacity reservation, voltage control or frequency control. How much, for example these revenues can amount to, can be calculated for each individual contract and case.

Power industry and battery energy storage

A large influx of variable renewable energy sources, sun and wind, that have a variable energy production during the day, affects the stability and reliability of the power grid. On-line battery storages are used to balance the system, using the operating frequency of the network, or on the other hand, for revenues from the difference in the price of electricity on the grid during the day. In this regard, electricity storages which meet the standards of connection to the power grid, with their quick response, help stabilize the operation of the electric power system. For this reason, when connecting new solar and wind farms to the transmission and distribution system, battery storages are a mandatory resource for electricity production.

There are so-called "stand-alone" battery storages on the distribution and transmission network. They are used to stabilize the operation of these networks, in case of short-term disturbances.

Battery electric energy storage projects (BESS) make the energy network not only more flexible and stable, but make investments in such projects bankable, with an acceptable investment return period, typically between 6 and 8 years.

When designing battery systems, attention is paid to safety of these systems, efficiency of the energy conversion cycle, operating temperature range, number of battery cycles, energy density, recycling possibilities, but also prices.
