Belgrade leaning tower deviates from its axis by as much as 1.20 meters - Church of St. Anthony of Padua needs renovation

The parish priest of this church, Fr. Ilija Alandjak, tells eKapija that the tower is currently about 1.20 meters off its axis, and that since March of last year it has “progressed” in tilting by a few millimeters.
He says that there is a great fear that the tower will collapse, but there is also a rehabilitation plan made by the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Belgrade, and the problem is the funds, which are not small for this investment.
- We reported our problem to the city and the state, we wrote to the Ministry of Construction. The profession has recognized the problem, the Faculty of Civil Engineering has created a rehabilitation plan that costs a lot, and we cannot do it alone - reveals Fr. Ilija Alandjak.
The parish priest says that the church he heads is obliged to monitor the tilt of the tower every year and that they can cover it financially, but that the rehabilitation significantly exceeds regular maintenance costs, so they expect help from the city or the ministry.
- It is very difficult to estimate when the rehabilitation could begin. The authorities we contacted said that they would do what they could, but time is passing and we live with anxiety. There is a danger that the tower will collapse, and there are many residential buildings around our building, so there is a risk for the residents as well, so it is not just material damage - says Alandjak.
The stability of the tower has also been significantly disrupted by the constant construction of residential and commercial buildings in the immediate vicinity, and the newest one that is being built will have as many as 15 floors!

Having purchased land in Belgrade in 1926 between Bregalnicka and Pop Stojanova streets, they began building the monastery on August 3 and completed it on November 16 of that year.
Construction of the new church began in 1929 according to the designs of the famous Slovenian architect Joze Plecnik, who was invited to Belgrade through the Archdiocese at the suggestion of the sculptor Ivan Mestrovic.
The 52-meter-high tower was erected in 1962 and has been slightly tilted since it was built, so the place of worship partly because of this, as well as its high architectural value, represents a kind of symbol of the capital city.
