Green light given for first phase of works on Rudovci dam and retention pond near Lazarevac

Due to the development of coal exploitation in the Kolubara coal basin, which requires the expansion of exploitation capacities and the opening of new open pit mines, it has been known for some time that Elektroprivreda Srbije is planning to build the Rudovci dam and retention pond near Lazarevac.

In connection with this project, the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure recently issued Elektroprivreda Srbije, or its branch RB Kolubara, a certificate for the execution of the first phase of works related to this project.

As can be seen in the issued document, Elektroprivreda Srbije (branch RB Kolubara) has been confirmed to carry out the first phase of works, which include the construction of the dam and dam facilities and the arrangement of the sub-dam plateau, as well as works related to the removal of existing facilities on several cadastral plots in KO Rudovci. The area of the facilities to be removed ranges from 20 to 190 square meters.

In addition, the Putevi Beograda company was granted the works related to the reconstruction and relocation of part of the local road route Rudovci – Krusevica, and Telekom Srbija was granted the relocation of telecommunications cables.

As previously indicated by EPS, the Pestan River flows through the Kolubara lignite basin in its lower course and this watercourse flows over the planned exploitation fields - Field E and, at the confluence in Kolubara, over the South Field. Given that this river flows through Field E, in order to protect the future mine from flooding, works are planned to protect the mine from future flooding.

During 2007, the General Project for the Regulation of the Pestan River and the Control of Floodwater Discharge was prepared, and this project was revised and accepted by the Republic Revision Commission. Within this project, the concept of the regulation of the Pestan River and the control of its floodwaters was defined, in order to protect the open-pit mines of the Kolubara basin.

A system is planned for the regulation of the Pestan River, consisting of facilities that provide active and passive flood protection measures. The active measures consist of five retention reservoirs - two on the Pestan River - Rudovci and Krusevica, and one each on the tributaries Trbusnica, Bistrica and Darosavica. It is defined that the retention areas should be of such a volume that they can accommodate the flood waves of the hundred-year high waters of the basin they control without overflowing - the retention reservoirs retain the entire volume of the flood waves of the hundred-year high waters.
