Contract for design and construction of first line of Belgrade subway signed – Procurement of 32 sets included

The contract for the design and construction of the traffic system for the first phase of Line 1 of the Belgrade subway, as well as the Financial Protocol between the Government of Serbia and the Government of France on cooperation in the field of financing the first phase of the Belgrade subway project, have been signed, the Ministry of Finance announced.

The contract for the design and construction of the traffic system for the first phase of Line 1 of the Belgrade subway was signed by the Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Aleksandra Sofronijevic, the Alstom Europe Region President Andrew DeLeone, the Director of the Public Utility Company Belgrade Metro and Train Andreja Mladenovic and the Secretary of the Secretariat for Public Transport Slaven Andric, while the Financial Protocol was signed by the Minister of Finance Sinisa Mali and the Ambassador of France to Serbia Florence Ferrari.

– The protocol envisages financial support in the form of a loan from the French Treasury in the amount of EUR 150 million for the implementation of the Belgrade subway project, one of the most important infrastructure projects in Serbia – said the Minister of Finance Sinisa Mali, as said in the statement.

He emphasized that those two contracts represented an important step in the implementation of the first line of the Belgrade subway, which aimed to improve public transport and which represented an environmentally friendly mode of transport.

– Serbia will have a modern capital with everything that a city of several million people needs, and Belgrade will get its long-awaited subway, after several decades of waiting and empty promises – stated Mali.

He pointed out that priority, strategic projects took a long time, but that with the construction of the subway, Serbia was finally entering a phase when the first results of many years of preparations would be visible.

The Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Aleksandra Sofronijevic emphasized that cooperation with French partners on the project to build the first line of the Belgrade subway was one of the most significant examples of successful interstate cooperation.

– This is a clear indicator that Serbia has the capacity to implement complex and strategic infrastructure projects. The construction of the subway is not just an investment in transport infrastructure, but an investment in sustainable development, improving the quality of life of citizens and the future of Belgrade as a modern European capital. This project confirms that Serbia is investing in infrastructure in a planned and responsible manner that will serve generations to come – said Sofronijevic.

The French Ambassador to Serbia Florence Ferrari said that she was pleased with that day's signing of the commercial contract with Alstom for the train sets of the first line of the Belgrade subway and the financial protocol that would enable its financing.

– This signing represents a new, decisive and concrete stage of this project, which is important both for our bilateral relations and for France’s engagement in supporting strategic projects that benefit the citizens of Serbia. The arrival of the subway in Belgrade will improve the quality of life of Belgraders by reducing traffic congestion and carbon emissions, which will also improve the air quality in the city – said Ferrari.

The commercial contract with Alstom includes the development of project and technical documentation, procurement, transportation and execution of works on the installation of equipment and materials, testing and commissioning of the Traffic System of the first phase of Line 1 of the Belgrade Subway.

This contract envisages the procurement of a total of 32 sets of subway trains, which represents the total need for the entire Line 1, as well as the implementation of supporting systems necessary for the safe and reliable functioning of subway traffic.

When fully completed, the first subway line will connect Zeleznik and Mirijevo, the second line is planned for the Bezanija-Mirijevo section, while line three will connect Banjica and Bezanija.
