Serbia acquires supercomputer worth EUR 50 million - Contract signed with French company Bull SAS

(Photo: Taylor Vick/Unsplash)  The agreement on HPC (supercomputer) and the development of artificial intelligence is part of a large intergovernmental agreement between the governments of France and Serbia, and it was signed by Mihailo Jovanović, director of the Office for IT and eGovernment and Deputy Director of Eviden Group Aleksandr Zhui, on the authority of the director of Bull SAS, the Government announced. The signing of the contract was attended by Prime Minister Milos Vucevic who pointed out that the acquisition of the second supercomputer shows that our country is moving in the direction of development and to create opportunities for scientists to receive better and more substantial support so that they can work even faster on their projects. According to him, the signed contract also means that the owners of startup companies, as well as those who are considering starting a private business, will be additionally encouraged to make such a decision, and those who are already in business can develop their own business even more successfully. - This also means that we will be able to implement the digitization of medical administration project much more simply, from scheduling an examination to diagnosis, with the protection of personal data - Vucevic stressed. The Prime Minister indicated that part of the arrangement also refers to the development of artificial intelligence, tools and applications which should help Serbia to be more successful in various sectors, from energy and transport to smart city development. The Director of the Office for IT and eGovernment Mihailo Jovanović explained that the new supercomputer will be an upgrade to the existing national platform for the development of artificial intelligence and our first supercomputer, located in the State Data Center in Kragujevac. He recalled that in 2022, the Government acquired its first supercomputer, which is given free of charge to all technical faculties, institutes, science and technology parks, startups. Jovanović stressed that in this way the state initiated the development and application of artificial intelligence in Serbia, adding that the new supercomputer, the subject of this contract, has even 20 times more superchips than the first and almost 30 times more data space. - Thanks to it, we will position our country as one of the leaders in the broader region in terms of national supercomputer capacity - said the director of the Office, noting that a supercomputer with software and Mistral models of generative artificial intelligence represents an investment of approximately EUR 36 million. He explained that around EUR 14 million refers to projects and development of services that are based on the application of artificial intelligence, especially in the health sector, e-government, energy and transport. |
