Pointing out how much the “free” public transport cost the city and the citizens, Nikola Jovanovic, the director of the Center for Local Self-Government, said that, in the first six months of 2025 alone, RSD 20.58 billion, or close to EUR 30 million a month, had been paid from the budget of the city of Belgrade to the transporters.

– If we add to that number direct subsidies to GSP, loan servicing, rail infrastructure and the already agreed increase of the fee for private transporters, we end up with a price of EUR 400 million a year – explains Jovanovic.

Jovanovic also pointed out that “there is no city in the world where a fourth of the budget is ‘eaten’ by the public transport.”

– A system designed this way is pushing Belgrade toward a certain bankruptcy and burying the public finances of the capital city – concludes the director of the Center for Local Self-Government.
