According to city councilor Igor Grmusa, the old rail corridor creates the possibility of a new form of public transport. He emphasizes that these are plans for the future and that they will be possible only after the construction of the rail bypass is completed.
– The plan is to introduce public rail traffic to Pantelej in the future, or to create a ring from the Rail Station, Niska Banja, Trosarina, or Stop Shop, then Lion 3, then along the new boulevard to Heroja sa Kosara Boulevard and back to the rail station – says Grmusa.
He explains that the old rail route can be used for public transport, but that it is necessary to lower the track to the level of the road and not make it look like a rampart. As he says, it would actually be used by trams.
– That translates to trams. There is also an idea to introduce something like BG voz. It operates by renting rail cars and a locomotive from Srbija voz, and only the track from Serbian Railways – Grmusa explains.
New boulevards, pedestrian and bicycle paths are also planned, but the councilor does not specify when any of the announced ones will be implemented, but that it is only a plan for the future.
Incidentally, the option of returning trams to Nis has been mentioned for several years. For example, this item was included in the Development Program of the City of Nis for 2019.
Trams in Nis began operating on November 16, 1930, and transported the people of Nis until August 10, 1958, when thousands of people gathered to see them off.
