According to the proposed amendments to the General Regulation Plan, Unit 8 Petrohemija, Azotara and Rafinerija in the settlement of Pancevo, which has been made available for early public inspection, it is planned to remove almost all existing production and storage capacities from the era of the chemical industry here, while a smaller number of infrastructure systems will remain in function and be incorporated into the future purpose of the space, primarily a data center.
The document clearly states that the key plants and facilities of Azotara are being removed: the carbamide plant, the carbamide storage facility, the liquid nitrogen fertilizer (UAN) warehouse, the KAN (calcium-ammonium-nitrate) plant, the nitric acid plant, as well as the grain storage silos. In addition, the entire Block 6 is planned to be removed, which included ammonia production plants (Amonijak 2 and ammonia storage, Amonijak 3), nitric acid and carbamide production facility, which have been out of operation for a long time. This practically erases the entire production infrastructure of the former chemical giant, with an emphasis on the complete removal of hazardous materials and dismantling of all facilities.
In their place, a data center is planned to be built, which will occupy the central part of the complex. Several buildings are planned to be erected within a closed and fenced-off system, including the main data center building, technical and auxiliary buildings, as well as accompanying energy and cooling capacities. A special part of the document is dedicated to the infrastructure requirements for the operation of the data center - it emphasizes the need for a strong power supply, additional network connections, as well as a special infrastructure for cooling servers. Cooling systems will be associated with high water and energy consumption, while the possibility of waste heat and technical waste emissions is also mentioned, which is why specialized control and treatment systems will be introduced.
