“BeoGrid 2025” launched: Construction of first two high-voltage transmission lines to connect Belgrade and Novi Sad begins in Surcin, total project value EUR 205 million

With the launch of works on the construction of the first two high-voltage transmission lines that will connect Belgrade and Novi Sad, the implementation of the “BeogGrid” project, whose total value will be EUR 205 million and which will have a total of six functional units, officially began in Surcin today. The total value of the first two transmission lines is around EUR 22 million.

– We expect the construction of a new transformer station in Belgrade to begin soon, which will be connected to the Cibuk 1 substation with a new 83-kilometer transmission line, thus ensuring stable transmission of electricity produced from renewable energy sources in southern Banat, as well as relieving the load on the existing network – said Rados Popadic, Assistant Minister of Mining and Energy for Electric Power, who attended the start of works within this project with the General Director of Elektromreza Srbije, Jelena Matejic.

As he added, Serbia has recognized the importance of investing in the transmission system in order to enable the integration of more capacities from renewable energy sources, increase the exchange of electricity with neighbors and ensure a safe, stable and efficient supply to consumers.

– That is why we have started investing in connecting to the transmission systems of eight neighboring countries, whereby by the end of the decade, EUR 500 million will be invested in priority projects, and the total value of all planned projects will reach around one billion euros – said Popadic, as announced by the relevant ministry.

Popadic emphasized that the projects to improve the transmission network showed that Serbia was a key country through which electricity was transmitted in the wider region.

Jelena Matejic said that the “BeoGrid2025” project was of particular importance for Serbia.

– BeoGrid2025 is part of the broader North CSE Corridor project, which also includes the duplication of the existing 400 kV interconnecting transmission line Djerdap 1 - Portile De Fier (Romania). The North CSE Corridor project is part of the European Ten-Year Network Development Plan TYNDP2020, a regional investment plan (RgIP2020), and is supported by the Romanian transmission system operator, as well as the German development bank KfW through the preparation of a Feasibility Study. The North CSE Corridor has regional significance because it increases the transmission capacity between the Republic of Serbia and Romania, which affects the creation of an integrated European electricity market – Matejic emphasized.

She pointed out that the “BeoGrid2025” project was also important because of the additional backup power supply for the EXPO 2027 project, enabling long-term development of the entire zone, and that EMS JSC had put the project at the top of the priority list and accelerated the pace of implementation.
