Serbia’s natural gas imports from Azerbaijan could increase to 1 billion cubic meters annually, more than 2.5 times the originally contracted volume of 400 million cubic meters, according to Serbian Minister of Energy Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic, in an interview with Azerbaijan’s Report News Agency.

- We expect negotiations on new agreements to begin in the near future, the Minister stated, noting that the current contracts provide for deliveries of up to 400 million cubic meters per year through 2026.

Minister Djedovic Handanovic emphasized that the construction of a new interconnector with North Macedonia will enable Serbia to receive Azerbaijani gas through the Southern Gas Corridor, which includes the TANAP and TAP pipelines.

She pointed out that, at present, Serbia’s only route for receiving Azerbaijani gas is the interconnector with Bulgaria, while the majority of the country’s gas demand is currently met via the Balkan Stream pipeline.

- We view Azerbaijani gas as a key alternative supply source, especially in light of our aim to reduce dependence on a single supplier, she added.

The Minister also stated that the new gas supply contracts with Azerbaijan will ensure not only secure and stable deliveries, but also provide sufficient resources for operating planned gas-fired power plants.

- We intend to expand our cooperation through a project to build a gas power plant near Niš, and we expect to sign a memorandum of cooperation with the Azerbaijani side soon. This initiative has been identified as a priority project in Serbia’s new Energy Development Strategy and the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan, the Minister concluded.
