Hotel Holiday Inn in New Belgrade closed – Bank to move into building

The hotel of the famous international chain Holiday Inn in Spanskih boraca Street in New Belgrade was closed recently, and Halkbank is to move into the building soon.

Holiday Inn Belgrade was opened back in 2007, when New Belgrade was still being established as the business center of the capital city. It didn’t even manage to “come of age”. Now, according to the notice on the door of the former hotel, but also the decision of the Ministry of Construction, Halkbank is soon to move into the building.

To clarify, on May 5, the ministry adopted the decision by which the bank is allowed to repurpose the tourism facility - hotel into office space.

As said, the building will not go through any major transformations, which is also confirmed by the location requirements that the competent ministry issued in March.

– At the basement level, the current state is to be kept, the rooms which acted as storage for clean and dirty laundry are to become auxiliary rooms. The kitchen is to be retained as is in all aspects, without any changes. The plan is for the kitchen to be used only for the needs of the employees, so it will be used in a lower capacity than was needed for hotel purposes – the document says.

As added, on the ground floor, everything is to be kept as is, the space that was meant for the hotel’s reception area is becoming the reception desk for the clients of the office building, the luggage room will be used as an auxiliary room. The restaurant remains in service to the employees, so it will be used in a lower capacity than before.

– The meeting rooms on the first floor are to be kept as they are, the rooms are to be turned into offices – the location requirements explain and specify that, in the hotel’s two-bed rooms, offices with two work desks will be located, whereas, in single-bed rooms, offices with one work desk are planned.

How Holiday Inn changed owners

Few people remember that the Holiday Inn in Belgrade was built by investors from Kazakhstan, more precisely, the Kazakh Bank Turan Alem (BTA). Next to the hotel, the multipurpose hall Belexpo Center was built as well. It hosted numerous exhibitions, events, but also live shows by local and international music stars such as Morrissey, Faithless, Thievery Corporation, James Blunt…

The buildings were taken over in November 2016 by Miroslav Miskovic’s company Delta, which invested more than two million euros in their reconstruction.

However, Delta sold these facilities at the end of 2022 to the company Savooja, which is connected with Zekstra Grupa. Belexpo Center closed at the beginning of 2023, and Grand Casino moved into the premises after the demolition of the Hotel Jugoslavija.
