Kragujevac to launch project of repair of Old Assembly building – RSD 4.35 million approved

At this year’s contest of the Ministry of Culture “Cities in Focus”, the City of Kragujevac has received funds for the project “The Preservation of the Cultural Identity of the First Capital of Modern Serbia”. The project entails the repair of the building of the Old Assembly, and the Ministry of Culture has approved funds in the amount of RSD 4,350,000. The agreement was signed between minister Nikola Selakovic on behalf of the Government of Serbia and the mayor of Kragujevac, Nikola Dasic.

– Funds of RSD 4,350,000 mean a lot to our city, because they will help renovate a cultural good, Milos’s old assembly, Serbia’s first assembly – said Dasic.

Historical importance of Old Assembly building

The building of the Old Assembly, raised in 1859, is located in the churchyard of the Old Church, on the right-hand bank of the Lepenica, in the “Milosev venac” complex. As the once center of political life, this edifice has a great historical and cultural significance for Kragujevac. Today, among other things, it is a place for important events, such as the Sretenje Academy and the Ceremonial Session of the City Assembly on the occasion of the Djurdjevdan holiday – the Day of the City. The building, in which over 30 sessions of the assembly were held, including the one where the decisions of the Berlin Congress were presented, was pronounced a cultural monument of great importance in 1979.
