New Port of Belgrade to Be Built Near Pupin Bridge After All? – Return of Abandoned Location, Public-Private Partnership Also Announced

The construction of the new Port of Belgrade will be done through a public-private partnership, announced the minister of construction, transport and infrastructure of Serbia, Goran Vesic. As announced by this ministry, he pointed out that the location for the construction of the new Port of Belgrade had been set and that it would be on the left coast of the Danube, “a small distance away from the Pupin Bridge.”

Let us remind that this location has been in the running before, along with the Port of Pancevo and a location in Krnjaca. However, according to the urban project which was published in mid-2022, the location was supposed to be on the left coast of the Danube, at km 1161+800, downstream from the existing Port of Belgrade and the Pancevo Bridge, more precisely, in Krnjaca.

The same project, which the Urban Planning Institute of Belgrade prepared at the initiative of the Port Governance Agency, plans for the port to take up an area of around 37.6 ha, and the total width of the water area is 230 m.

At the end of 2020, the then assistant minister for water management, Veljko Kovacevic, said that three options for the new location were being considered for the exact location for the construction of the new port in Belgrade: a location 10 km upstream from the Pupin Bridge, a location in Krnjaca and the Port of Pancevo as the Belgrade port.

He previously said that the location upstream from the Pupin Bridge, in whose proximity the construction of an industrial-technology park in Borca together with partners from China was planned, had the greatest potential.

It was also announced that the construction of the Port of Belgrade could be supported by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
