Paracin Gets Better Flood Protection – Eleven Kilometers of Crnica River Bank Ameliorated, Mobile Dams, Concrete Walls and Surge Barriers Built

A total of 11 kilometers of the Crnica River bank has been ameliorated in Paracin, and the critical spots have been protected by mobile dams. Concrete flood protection walls have been built, mobile walls have been procured and the bed of the Crnica River has been cleaned and developed, the EU Delegation to Serbia announced.

Also, four surge barriers have been built at the tributaries of the Crnica, which should dampen the speed of the water torrent and reduce the degree of erosion and the accumulation of material on the river bed downstream.

The works were carried out within the “Reconstruction of the Flood Protection Infrastructure” project, worth EUR 19.5 million, financed by the European Union (EUR 19 million) and the Republic of Austria (EUR 500,000) and carried out by the Austrian Development Agency.

The value of the works and the equipment used for the protection of Paracin and Glavica settlements, financed by the European Union, is EUR 4.25 million.

Paracin is only one of the places in Serbia which has been gravely affected by floods in the past, especially in May 2014.

– These works are part of a larger intervention of the European Union aiming to help the towns that were flooded in 2014. It is a gesture of partnership and solidarity of the EU citizens with the citizens of Serbia. We saw what the flooded areas looked like at the time and this is the least we could do – said the head of the EU Delegation to Serbia, ambassador Sem Fabrizi.

He reminded that the total value of the help provided by the EU to Serbia for flood protection had amounted to around EUR 170 million since 2014.
