The main waste water facility in Vienna will supply as of 2020 with renewable energy from waste water mud which is the biggest Vienna environmental project.

When setting the cornerstone for the project of energy mud optimization, the mayor of Vienna, Michael Haupl explained that Vienna with this project is setting up new standards which have already becoming role model in the world.

- Savings-oriented relation towards our available resources is one of the main challenges for towns in 21st century – the mayor of Vienna said.

Waste water treatment facilities are grouped in the biggest energy consumers. In Vienna, one percent of total electricity consumption is used here. With efficient energy exploitation which contains mud, the main facility could generate by 2020 produce necessary energy from treated gas.

- Through mud, waste water treatment facility will become an environmental electric power plant. Thus, climate balance in Vienna will profit since as of 2020, exhaust of carbon-dioxide will decrease by 40.000 tons per year. A total of EUR 250 m will be invested in the entire project since the city of Vienna has been investing in environment even in economically difficult times– Haupl said.
