Astronomers have identified a new white dwarf that is so cold that its carbon has crystallized, effectively forming a diamond the size of Earth, Space.com has reported.
The new stellar object has been noticed thanks to a pulsar dubbed PSR J2222-0137 with which it does an orbital tango.
This white dwarf is possible the coldest star ever detected.
Astronomers have calculated that its average temperature is only about 2,700 degrees Celsius.
For the sake of comparison, that's 5,000 times cooler than the center of Earth's sun, while its core's temperature is around 15 million degrees Celsius.
