European Union considers full ban on mobile roaming charges

Judging from the leaked draft law, the European Commission considers banning mobile roaming charges completely within the European Union, Indikator.ba reports.

This proposal has come from EC Vice President Neelie Kroes and is already frowned upon by telecom firms, some of which have assessed that it could cost them up to EUR 7 billion.

The draft law has come only three months after the EU ordered member states to cut mobile phone roaming charges by 36 percent. People at the European Commission did not want to give any comment on the legislation pending promulgation, but they confirmed their commitment to the final goal, and that is a complete ban on mobile roaming charges between member states.

If this proposal is accepted, it may be put in effect as early as next year.
