Justification study completed on construction of "light metro" in Belgrade-first line to be finished by 2012- €400m

According to General Plan of Belgrade until 2021, three lines of "light" metro are going to be formed in Belgrade, the first of which will go from Ustanička Street, via the city center, to Trgovačka Street. Its construction will start in 2007 and will be over before 2012. There are 270,000 citizens living along the planned route of that line (12,365 m). Of 20 stations, eight are underground ones.

Motor pool necessary for that line is 46 two-cab driving units and six spare vehicles. The advantage of light metro in over bus and tram transportation lies in the facts that there is possibility for subsequent additional construction to the level of classic metro, if there is need for that, possibility for gradual adaptation of existing tram system, which results in quicker developing of the system, 70 - 80% of totally independent route, both underground and overground, the vehicles that has low floor and are accessible to persons with disabilities and the their capacity is 300 passengers.

Construction of classic metro, according to researches, is not justified, because expected number of passengers on the most loaded sections of public transportation (Bridge in Brankova Street and Vojvode Mišića Boulevard) is not enough for classic metro.

The other two lines of light metro will go from Railway Station "Prokop" to Law Faculty and from Banovo brdo, via Ada Ciganlija to Novi Beograd. About €400m will be needed for construction of the first line of "light" metro, which, according to words of mayor Nenad Bogdanović, Belgrade can provide alone.

Investor of the project is the City Parliament and Directorate for Building Land and Construction of Belgrade, whereas the authors are Spanish company Ineco and Yugoslav Institute for City Planning and Residing.
