Risk of aflatoxin presence in meat and eggs?

There is an objective risk of aflatoxin presence in eggs, poultry and other meat in addition to milk and dairy products, Zeljko Brozovic, secretary of the Agricultural Association of the Serbian Chamber of Commerce (SCC), told Tanjug news agency today.

Aflatoxin in milk was only a trigger because that harmful substance can occur in all products from animals that were fed on contaminated feedstuffs, the expert from the SCC warned.

According to Brozovic, consumers are confused and lack quality information about food safety in Serbia. Brozovic stressed that the main problem with contaminated feedstuffs was inadequate analysis of silage, given that registered industrial manufacturers account for only 4 percent of all manufacturers.

- If you stop feeding contaminated fodder to a milking cow, toxins will leave its body in one week and it will start giving healthy milk - Brozovic claims.

The Administration for Veterinary Medicine of the Ministry of Agriculture yesterday published a list of samples of 39 types of milk made by six manufacturers in Serbia that are believed to contain unacceptable levels of aflatoxin.
