Serbia Joins the Artemis Space Program

Serbian Minister of Foreign Affairs Marko Djuric signed an agreement at NASA headquarters in Washington under which Serbia joined the Artemis space program, stating that this represents an important step for a country building its future on knowledge, innovation and international cooperation.

Djuric said that joining the Artemis program confirms Serbia's commitment to respect for international law, scientific progress and joint action by nations in the exploration of space.

The Serbian foreign minister stressed that the greatest scientific achievements are made when knowledge and resources are brought together, rather than when countries act individually.

He particularly emphasized the fact that the Artemis Accords are based on the 1967 Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies, as well as on the broader framework of international space law that has guided the peaceful exploration of space for decades.

Djuric noted that, although Serbia is not a space power, the country holds an important place in the history of space exploration, recalling the contribution of the "Serbian Seven" – scientists and engineers of Serbian origin whose knowledge and expertise contributed to the Apollo program, one of humanity's greatest achievements.

The Serbian foreign minister also recalled meeting David Vujic, the last surviving member of the "Serbian Seven," during his previous term as Serbia's ambassador to the United States, the Government website reported.

He said that Serbia continues to invest in science, technology and innovation, and that membership in the Artemis program will create new opportunities to connect Serbian scientific institutions, universities, companies and young researchers with international partners.

Djuric assessed that, through this agreement, Serbia has joined the group of countries committed to transparent, responsible and peaceful space exploration and expressed gratitude to the United States and NASA for their partnership.

U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Oceans, International Environmental and Scientific Affairs Wesley Brooks emphasized that Serbia's accession to the program marks an important moment in relations between the two countries.

Brooks said that space cooperation is an area that connects nations through shared goals, innovation and the responsible use of space, adding that with this step Serbia continues the legacy of Serbian scientists who contributed to the U.S. space program and becomes part of the broader international community working on future space exploration.

The signing ceremony was attended by Serbian Ambassador to Washington Dragan Sutanovac, State Secretary at the Ministry of Science, Technological Development and Innovation of the Republic of Serbia Dr. Marija Gnjatovic, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Wesley Brooks and NASA Deputy Administrator Meta Anderson.
