Serbian factory to supply nanotubes for batteries for Volkswagen electric vehicles

OCSiAl, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of single-piece carbon nanotubes, has announced that it has been selected as a supplier to PowerCo, a battery manufacturer within the Volkswagen Group. The nanotubes for the battery factory in Salzgitter, Germany, will be supplied from the company’s production facility in Serbia.

This is a material used in graphite anodes of lithium-ion batteries, which, according to the company, improves electrical conductivity, dissipates heat more efficiently and allows batteries to withstand higher charging and discharging rates without overheating. This increases the safety, performance and service life of the batteries.

– Today, batteries containing our nanotubes power about a million electric vehicles worldwide. As part of our cooperation with PowerCo, we are supplying solutions for graphite anodes, which are an important part of new generation batteries – said Gregory Gurevich, Senior Vice President of OCSiAl.

As announced, the production facility in Serbia has met strict quality and reliability standards and passed the tests conducted by PowerCo, as well as other leading European and Asian battery manufacturers.

The company states that its TUBALL nanotubes are already supplied to most European battery manufacturers for electric vehicles, where they are used in the anodes and cathodes of lithium-ion batteries to increase energy density, faster charging and longer service life.

Due to the expected growth in demand for new generation batteries, OCSiAl is also considering expanding production capacities in Europe.

As a reminder, at the end of 2025, the company announced an investment of EUR 300 million in the construction of a graphene nanotube production facility in Luxembourg, thereby further expanding its presence in the European supply chain of the electric vehicle battery industry.
