Sjenica finds solution for municipal waste – Temporary transport to Prijepolje, Priboj and Nova Varos

The President of the Municipality of Sjenica, Mersiha Camovic Rebronja, in coordination with the mayors of Prijepolje, Priboj and Nova Varos, as well as the director of “Srbijasume”, reached an agreement on the temporary transport of municipal waste from the territory of the Municipality of Sjenica to landfills in Prijepolje, Priboj and Nova Varos.

Measure to come into effect immediately

The Municipality of Sjenica announced on Instagram that the measure comes into effect and will be valid in the coming period.

“In the coming period, the Municipality of Sjenica has committed itself to, in cooperation with the republican institutions, initiate and intensify activities to find and implement a permanent solution for the disposal of municipal waste,” the announcement states.

It is emphasized that the solution is temporary and that, for this reason, it is necessary to provide a sustainable and long-term solution for waste disposal as soon as possible.

“We are starting to clean up the municipality with the help of all municipalities participating in the coordination. We thank all institutions,” the Municipality said.

The Acting Director of the Public Enterprise “Srbijasume”, Krsto Janjusevic, during a visit to the Govedjak location, where citizens had blocked access to the landfill in recent days, confirmed that waste from this municipality would be transported to Priboj for the next month.

Govedjak landfill also being cleaned

The residents of Sjenica have blocked the Govedjak landfill in recent days in order to prevent the delivery of garbage, bearing in mind that, they say, it is an illegal landfill for which the court previously issued a decision prohibiting the dumping of garbage.

The situation in front of the Govedjak landfill near Sjenica at certain moments in the previous days was on the verge of an incident, and there were strong police forces on site securing the area.

Several dozen locals blocked the landfill, for which an agreement had previously been reached that no more waste would be dumped there. Given that another attempt was made to dump waste there on Wednesday, there was an escalation.

Due to a large number of trucks, but also other vehicles, the Sjenica–Nova Varos main road was completely blocked on Wednesday.

Earlier that day, information emerged that the Municipality of Sjenica, due to problems with waste disposal on its territory, had declared a state of emergency.

In recent days, this municipality has been flooded with waste, and this is one of the biggest environmental problems in this part of Serbia.

The Govedjak landfill has been in operation for more than 15 years, and about 16 tons of waste are brought to it daily.
