Dimitrovgrad could be another city in Serbia with a data center, and, as announced by the municipality, one of the largest in Europe. If everything goes according to plan, it should be built in the vicinity of Smilovsko polje.

As the Mayor of the Municipality of Dimitrovgrad, Vladica Dimitrov, pointed out, this is an investment of several billion euros. He assessed that the planned construction of a large data center on Smilovsko polje, which would be eight times larger than the one in Kragujevac, was an unprecedented development project for that municipality.

According to him, this is a complex whose construction would last at least four to five years and which would engage a large number of companies and workers from the entire region, and whose services, once built, would be used by countries such as Bulgaria, Turkey and Montenegro.

Dimitrov pointed out that the key reason for choosing the location was the proximity of the future Brebex solar power plant and a large transformer station, because such centers require huge amounts of energy, as well as a flat area of about 60 hectares, which is needed to build such a complex without wasting energy. He stated that the future investor would be one of the world’s major IT companies, and that the construction company Jadran was the bearer of the letter of intent.

He claims that the project would not use drinking water or water from the Smilovci Lakes for cooling, and that he expects a high level of transparency and environmental protection. As he says, the local government’s goal is to preserve the karst field, while details about the environmental impact will be known after the development of the Detailed Regulation Plan.

According to his estimates, the future data center could employ between 400 and 500 people.
