Construction of Trans-Balkan Corridor continues – EMS signs contract for third section worth EUR 113.5 million

Elektromreza Srbije has signed a contract for the expansion and reconstruction of the 220/35 kV Bajina Basta substation into a 400/220/35 kV substation, as well as the equipping of two 400 kV transmission lines at the 400/220 kV Obrenovac substation. The contract was signed on behalf of EMS AD by CEO Jelena Matejic, with representatives of the consortium of companies Energotehnika Juzna Backa and Elnos, selected after an international tender procedure.

The works on the substations in Bajina Basta and Obrenovac, together with the construction of a dual-system 400 kV transmission line between them, make up the third section of the Trans-Balkan Corridor for the transmission of electricity. The total value of this section is EUR 113.5 million, and the completion of the works is planned for the end of 2028.

The third section is financed by a loan from the German development bank KfW in the amount of EUR 64.5 million, a donation from the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF) of EUR 21 million, while the remaining funds are provided by EMS AD from its own sources.

The construction of the new network will, as announced, create conditions for the connection of new production capacities, including the future reversible hydroelectric power plant Bistrica, which will play a key role in balancing the system.

CEO Jelena Matejic emphasized that the signing of the contract represented a significant event when it came to further strengthening the transmission network in Serbia.

– By expanding and reconstructing the Bajina Basta substation, as well as equipping the 400 kV field at the Obrenovac substation, we are creating conditions for connecting a new dual-system 400 kV transmission line, the construction of which has already begun, which will significantly increase the safety and capacity of our transmission system – said Matejic.

The total value of the construction of the Trans-Balkan Corridor is around EUR 221 million.

The first section of the corridor, which included the construction of a dual-system 400 kV transmission line from the Pancevo 2 substation to the Romanian border, was completed in 2017, while the second section, which connected Kragujevac and Kraljevo and included work on substations in those cities, was completed in 2022.

The next phase is scheduled for the implementation of the fourth section, which includes the construction of a new dual-system 400 kV transmission line from Bajina Basta to Visegrad and Pljevlja.
