Belgrade Mayor Aleksandar Sapic has announced that work on the relocation of all installations, which are part of the preparations for the construction of a tunnel in the center of Belgrade, will begin tomorrow.

Sapic said at a press conference that the tunnel would connect the Danube and Sava rivers.

– This will be the largest capital project in terms of the urban part of the city. Traffic will be reduced, only public transport will be allowed in Despota Stefana Boulevard – he said.

The tunnel will connect the Sava and Danube slopes, or Kamenicka Street near the Faculty of Economics and Despota Stefana Boulevard.

The work will change the operating mode of several public transport lines - 33, 48, 58 and 96.

Initial estimates of the value of the tunnel construction were from EUR 100 to 150 million, but the revision of the Fiscal Strategy for 2026 to 2028 states that the total value of the project is 26 billion dinars (about EUR 220 million).

At the beginning of last year, the state took out a loan of 24.9 billion dinars (about EUR 213 million) from the Postanska Stedionica bank for the project.

The contractor is the Chinese company Power China, with which the contract was signed in 2023.
