Preparations for construction of extension of Jurija Gagarina Street begin – 45-m-wide road with three lanes in each direction, median strip, sidewalks and green belt planned

Heavy machinery, excavators and trucks loaded with gravel and sand are working hard at the site behind the new Chinese shopping center, at the end of Mileve Maric Ajnstajn and Dr Ivana Ribara streets. On that part of state-owned land where until two weeks ago there was scrub, but also improvised single-floor houses, orchards, and gardens of neighborhoods from New Belgrade, preparatory work has begun for the construction of a road that will connect New Belgrade and Surcin (an extension of Jurija Gagarina Street, ed. eKapija), and thus create a connection with the Milos Veliki highway.

A Chinese contractor was hired for the work, based on an intergovernmental agreement between Serbia and China signed in 2009, but separate, additional contracts were signed for the construction of this road. In addition to the Chinese contractors, this project also includes, as can be heard, Corridors of Serbia, as a supervisory body, and the Belgrade Land Development Public Agency.

As planned, the new road will shorten the route from New Belgrade to Surcin and EXPO, and will include several modes of transport - car, tram, bicycle, and sidewalks are also planned.

– This project plans two times three traffic lanes, the width of which is 10.5 meters on one side only, as well as a median strip. Along the route of the new road, two stops for bus and tram traffic should be created in both directions. A two-meter-wide green belt has been designed on both sides of the road, as well as a two-way bicycle path two and a half meters wide and sidewalks two meters wide – said Miroslav Cuckovic, city manager.

When everything is taken into account, this road should be 45 meters wide. The plan is also to form a network of side roads – Nova 14, Nova 15 and Nova 16, as well as pedestrian and vehicle paths.
