Telekom Srbija Group and its subsidiary Mtel have launched a significant project to modernize the fiber optic network connecting Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, using advanced solutions from the US company Ciena. This move represents a key step in strengthening the network’s capacity, preparing for 5G services and integrating the region into European digital communication flows.

The project uses the Ciena 6500 Packet-Optical Platform equipped with WaveLogic 5 Extreme coherent transceivers, which enables data transmission at speeds of up to 800 Gb/s over a 150-kilometer fiber optic route between the two countries. This technology provides high capacity, low latency and high network resilience, thus meeting future capacity demands brought by the growth of traffic from large cloud companies and the introduction of 5G services, announced Ciena, a global leader in fiber optic networks and high-speed connectivity.

Katarina Subotic, Sales Director at Telekom Srbija, pointed out that this project was a significant improvement of the existing network infrastructure, which enabled not only more reliable and efficient data transmission, but also new opportunities for regional business expansion. Subotic emphasized that the modernized optical connection contributed to increasing interconnection and strengthening the position of Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina as regional hubs for digital communication.

The project is being implemented in cooperation with IGMAKO Smart Solutions, a certified Ciena partner in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina that provides system integration and support for solution implementation.

Telekom Srbija is the leading telecom operator in Serbia, operating under the brands mts, Supernova and m:SAT TV, while Mtel is one of the most important telecommunications companies in Bosnia and Herzegovina with an extensive offer of mobile, fixed, internet and digital services, Ciena said in a statement.
