On how to maintain a leadership position in the era of digitization, electrification and automation, how the role of sales is changing and what is the future of the aftermarket industry, we spoke with Bratislav Kocić, Sales Director of Bosch Mobility Aftermarket for Serbia.
The Bosch company has been in business for more than 130 years and is a real influencer in the automotive industry, as you say. As a historical driver of key automotive innovations, from the first ignition systems to cutting-edge safety solutions, how does the company today maintain and expand its influence in an industry that is changing faster than ever?
- Since its foundation, Bosch has had a great impact on the automotive industry by constantly introducing technological changes and creating innovations that shape mobility. In the automotive industry in particular, everything is changing rapidly, and Bosch remains the driving force behind development, maintaining the same ambition to create technologies that improve mobility and set the standard for the future.
Your career with the company started more than two decades ago. How has the role of sales in the automotive sector changed since digitization and automation became standard?
- Digitization and automation have significantly changed the role of sales. Sales is not only a channel for product placement, but a strategic partner in the development and building of relationships with customers. Today, decisions are made based on analytics, real-time performance monitoring, digital tools and advanced platforms that enable a more precise understanding of partner, distributor and end-user needs. The line between sales, marketing and aftersales is becoming thinner and success depends on integrated work.

When you look at your team, what has been the biggest change in mindset and approach to work over the last ten years? What skills do you consider to be essential for a salesperson of the future in the aftermarket industry?
- When I look at my team today, there is certainly a big change in the way of thinking and the approach. Previously, the focus was on the product, its features, price, portfolio, which has remained today and is certainly important, but not enough. Today, the approach is strategic and it is necessary to understand the market, customer needs, trends, just like the product, but the key skills of a salesperson, in my opinion, are analytical thinking and working with data, knowing the peculiarities of each customer, consultative selling and the ability to build partnerships. The aftermarket seller is a technical expert, analyst, advisor and strategic partner to the customer.
How do you identify potential leaders in your team and how do you develop them? How do you build team resilience in times of market uncertainty?
- We recognize potential leaders based on their behavior and results. These are people who take responsibility, proactively share knowledge and ideas, and have a positive impact on the team. We build the team`s resilience through open communication, ongoing support and clear priorities that enable focus and stability. Improving skills and using the latest tools and technologies are also an essential part of that process.
How do you introduce new technologies and tools without disrupting existing processes that are already working well?
- The introduction of new technologies and tools is gradual, while respecting existing processes. The key is that innovation brings benefit, not complexity, although this is sometimes very difficult to avoid, especially with the introduction of new technologies such as Data Analytics or AI tools. However, every change starts with an analysis of the team`s needs and an assessment of the impact on existing processes. In the pilot phase, we test the new tool on smaller teams or a specific business segment. Based on that experience, we adjust our approach and make the necessary changes. When we are sure that a new technology brings real value, we expand it further. Transparent communication, clear expectations, support and training are key to integrating changes without disrupting established processes.

How does cross-sectoral collaboration within the company contribute to innovation and more effective response to customer needs?
- Cooperation between sectors is an important mechanism by which we accelerate innovation and raise the quality of services. When sales, marketing, technical support, logistics, and development share information, a complete market picture is obtained. Such an exchange enables faster recognition of trends, accurate definition of priorities and development of relevant solutions. Sales brings insights from the field, logistics optimizes the delivery process, and marketing ensures consistent communication and in this way we offer the customer a complete, sustainable and concrete solution.
Is there an innovation or trend that you believe will most redefine the aftermarket industry in the next five years?
- In the coming years, the aftermarket industry will be redefined through accelerated digitization and the integration of new technologies. Changes will require agility, analytics, flexibility and willingness to develop new solutions for customers from all participants. The key trend is not just an individual innovation, but a transformation of the entire approach, from sales and service, through logistics, to interaction with the end user.
Is there a practice from abroad or other Bosch markets that you would like to implement in our country?
- Bosch learns from the practice that we successfully apply in different markets. One of the practices that we would like to implement more intensively in Serbia is a systematic approach to the digital integration of the aftermarket process through digital tools and platforms for ordering to the analysis of market data, consumption and predictive planning and inventory optimization.
You recently organized an event where the development path of Bosch belts was presented - from leather belt to high-tech composite. How do modern technologies and new materials affect the development of the next generation of Bosch belts, especially when it comes to the extreme operating conditions of modern engines?
- Today`s engines operate at higher temperatures, with higher loads and longer maintenance intervals, which sets new standards for belt resistance and performance. The use of advanced polymers, composite materials and innovative manufacturing processes allow us to make belts thinner, but at the same time stronger and more resistant to wear, heat and oils. In addition, digital modeling and simulation in the early stages of development enable accurate prediction of the behavior of belts in extreme conditions, which shortens development time and increases product reliability.

"Bosch kept moving so you could brake in time" was the title of the event where you presented the development and future of braking systems. How does Bosch combine decades of experience with modern technologies to develop braking systems that anticipate and react to traffic situations? And what are the biggest challenges in integrating braking systems into electric and autonomous vehicles, and how is Bosch overcoming them?
- Bosch combines engineering knowledge with modern technologies to develop smart braking systems that understand the environment and react more quickly to changing traffic conditions. Integrating braking systems into electric and autonomous vehicles brings significant challenges. Electric vehicles require optimization of regenerative braking and coordination with the electric drive, while autonomous vehicles require precise and rapid interaction with sensors, software and other safety systems in real time. Bosch overcomes these challenges through hardware and software development, rigorous tests and simulations in real conditions, continuous cooperation with vehicle manufacturers to ensure reliability and safety. Also, a big advantage is that we are a system supplier, which means that we have everything listed above in-house, so that all the knowledge and all the data are available to us, which gives us a huge advantage.
What are the company`s plans for the next period?
- Together with other industries in which it operates, Bosch strategically strives to remain at the forefront of mobility transformation. This means that we are planning strong investment in future technologies, restructuring and growth, while maintaining innovation, competitiveness and flexibility in all segments. The use of modern technologies, digitization, application of artificial intelligence must be represented in all segments and spheres. In the near future, vehicles will be increasingly "smart", and Bosch aspires to be the one that defines modern standards.
