Peugeot presents new electric car with square steering wheel

French car manufacturer Peugeot has presented an unusual model of electric car - with a square steering wheel. The steering wheel, called Hypersquare on the Polygon model, uses “steer by wire” control technology, which eliminates the mechanical connection between the driver and the wheels.

This means that instead of a classic steering shaft, sensors on the steering wheel send signals to the steering mechanism, which then turns the wheels.

This steering wheel, which resembles a gaming console, will be installed in the car from 2026.

– Hypersquare is not just a new shape of the steering wheel - it is the new ergonomics of Peugeot and the Cockpit system and a fully electronic vehicle control system. The steering is completely electronic. There is no physical connection between the steering wheel and the wheels, and therefore no classic steering shaft. This is a cutting-edge technology confirmed in the aerospace industry, which offers agility and driving pleasure like never before – the company’s website says.

High precision in response

The company states that Hypersquare transforms driving into a natural, intuitive movement, enabling easy control in all situations. At low speeds, Hypersquare allows for quick and easy movements without moving your hands or multiple turns, with a maximum rotation of 170 degrees.

It provides high precision even at higher speeds, while filtering out unwanted vibrations.

Key controls are accessible at the fingertips, allowing your hands to remain on the wheel at all times.

Interior

The interior of the car is filled with animated micro-LED strips that stretch from front to rear.

A charge indicator is built into the vehicle’s C-pillar (rear side body support) and allows owners to check the battery status from the outside.

On the windshield, drivers can see a micro-LED projection that displays everything from speed to ambient animations. Different driving modes, Cruise, Fun and Hyper, completely transform the lighting and visuals. Both inside and out.

A redesigned cross member creates more space and comfort for the passenger.

The interior of the Polygon is made from recycled materials and old Peugeot seats. The paint contains components derived from discarded tires. The seats are 3D printed from recycled plastic.

The concept is designed for a sustainable, circular economy.
