USA: Either sale of NIS to “non-Russian” companies or nationalization

As far as the US is concerned, there are two solutions for NIS - the sale of the Russian stake to somebody that is in no way connected to Russia or the nationalization of the share of NIS which is owned by Gazprom and Gazpromneft, RTS learns unofficially from diplomatic sources.

The source says that the US does not see any other compromise for solving the issue of the sanctions on NIS.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic recently stated that “nationalization is the last option.” The diplomatic source responded that “sometimes the last option - is the best option.”

Any “creative” solution, the source pointed out, has to lead toward “Russia no longer making a profit in Serbia with which it would finance the war in Ukraine.”

US officials have repeated several times that “the sanctions are not directed against Serbia or the citizens of Serbia,” but that they are part of a wider strategy to pressure Russia to stop the war.

Yesterday, the president said that he expected to get responses regarding Naftna industrija Srbije at the end of that week or during the next one.

On October 9, Washington imposed sanctions on NIS due to the majority Russian share in the company.
