China and US in new trade talks – Looking for solution for tariffs

China and the US began new trade talks in Kuala Lumpur this weekend in order to find a solution to the tariff war between the world’s two largest economies.

AFP reported on the spot that Chinese Vice President He Lifeng arrived at the Merdeka 118 Tower, the second tallest skyscraper in the world, where the talks are being held.

The US delegation arrived through a separate entrance, outside the area covered by the cameras.

– The Chinese and US delegations met this morning to discuss economic and trade issues – reported the Chinese Xinhua news agency, confirming the start of the talks. An unnamed spokesman for the US Treasury Department also confirmed the start of the talks.

Malaysia hosted the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit, which began the next day in Kuala Lumpur, and the meeting was be attended by US President Donald Trump, who is on an Asian tour.

During his visit to Asia, the US president is due to meet his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on Thursday with the aim of finalizing a trade deal with Beijing.

The meeting is scheduled on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, which will be held in the South Korean city of Gyeongju starting on October 31.

The world’s two largest economies have been locked in a trade war since Donald Trump returned to the White House in January. A series of previous talks in Geneva, London, Stockholm and Madrid have so far prevented the two powers from carrying out their threats of punitive tariffs.

Their trade truce expires on November 10.
