Land being prepared for construction of new Zlatibor airport runway – Length in first phase 700 m, final 2,500 m

The most visited Serbian mountain is striving to become a world tourist center. This is supported by the construction of an airport on Zlatibor, which will complete and round off the tourist offer. In the area where earthworks are currently being carried out, the mayor of Cajetina, Milan Stamatovic, announced the start of the implementation of the Zlatibor airport construction project.

– In the first phase of the works, the runway will be about 700 meters long, in the second 1,200, and the final length will be 2.5 kilometers. Public interest has been established here and we are fighting to reserve the land of the Agricultural Combine, which has been blocked, for such purposes through public interest – said Stamatovic.

According to him, the idea of building an airport on Zlatibor is more than two decades old, but only now have the conditions been created for its implementation.

– Even 20 years ago, there was an idea that Zlatibor would have its own airport for small and light aircraft, but now the possibilities are much greater - a 2.5-kilometer runway will allow the landing of larger aircraft – the mayor emphasized.

He added that the current works were also being used as a borrowing site for material that would be used for road construction, and that local public companies were benefiting from the works too.

– The material found here is ideal for road construction, so it is currently being used for our infrastructure projects. At the same time, we are arranging and preparing the terrain for the future runway of the Zlatibor airport – said Stamatovic, adding that Uzice Roads, which was building a bypass and a recycling yard, was also participating in the works.

Stamatovic said that this project was of exceptional importance for Zlatibor and that, upon completion, the airport would represent a new development opportunity not only for the tourist offer but also for the economy of the entire region.
