The Secretariat for Urban Planning and Construction has made available for public inspection the Draft General Regulation Plan of the Rail Systems in Belgrade with elements of a detailed development of the second line of the metro system - Stage II. The biggest changes compared to the previous plan relate to changes to the route and the introduction of two new stations - Slavija (instead of Manjez) and the Karadjordje Park.

The subject of the Plan is the detailed development of the second stage of the second line of the subway system and the amendment to the rules for the regulation and construction of the general part of the GRP of the rail systems, and related to the second subway line, whose route from the planned subway station Block 18 to the planned subway station Juzni Boulevard has been adjusted in relation to the solution defined by the GRP of the rail systems.

The Plan boundary includes the area of detailed development of the second stage of the second line of the subway system, i.e. the area from the planned Mercator subway station to the planned Mirijevo subway station, along the route - Zorana Djindjica Boulevard, Block 18, Kraljice Drage Obrenovic Street, Devojacki park, Kralja Milana Street, Oslobodjenja Boulevard, Juzni Boulevard, Gospodara Vucica Boulevard, Kralja Aleksandra Boulevard and further through Mirijevo to the planned unified subway station of the first and second lines of the Mirijevo subway system, as well as the abandoned route of the second subway line from the planned Block 18 subway station to the planned Juzni Boulevard subway station.

The Plan boundary also includes the area east of the Pancevo Bridge, between the Danube coastal belt, the planned access road to the bridge and the planned sewage collector, as well as the area in the Ada Huja zone, north of Visnjicka Street, south, southwest and west of the Kartonka Avala factory.

The area covered by the Plan is approximately 208 ha.

Subway Line 2 route, 2023 plan: Bezanija Depot-Marka Celebonovica Street-KBC Bezanijska kosa-Zemun Rail Station-Zemun Novi grad-Ugrinovacka Street-Filipa Visnjica Street-Zemun Stadium-City Park-Dzona Kenedija Street-New Belgrade Municipality-Mercator-Arena-Sava Centar-Block 18-Sava Square-Manjez-Makenzijeva Street-Juzni Boulevard-Grcica Milenka Street-Vojislava Ilica Street-Zvezdara Market-Mite Ruzica Street-Ustanicka Street-Mirijevo.

So, according to the previous solution that was on public display in 2023, the route of the second line included the Manjez and Makenzijeva Street stations. Instead, the new plan envisages a station on the Slavija Square, the construction of which also includes the Miticeva rupa zone, as well as the Karadjordje Park station, in the immediate vicinity of the rail station of the same name and at the entrance to the rail tunnel.

The Karadjordje Park station will, as stated, be one of the key transfer hubs in the city, as it will enable the connection of the subway with tram and bus lines, as well as with the urban-suburban railway (Beovoz) stop. This, as stated in the plan, will achieve a high level of intermodality of the public transport system in Belgrade.

Incidentally, according to the draft of the GRP of the rail systems in Belgrade with elements of a detailed development of the second line of the subway system, which was on public display in 2023, the route of the second section has been changed in the part that passes through the Bezanijska kosa settlement, and it is now planned that the line will “turn” through the Bezanijska kosa settlement and include the Bezanijska kosa Clinical Hospital Center.

Number of passengers

According to data from the Preliminary Design of the first phase of line 1 and the Conceptual Solution of line 3, as well as based on additional modeling conducted by the French company EGIS after the correction of the line 2 route, the highest load within the planned subway system is expected on line one.

On the section from the Danube station to the Pancevo Bridge, around 10,670 passengers are expected to travel during the morning peak hour in the direction of Karaburma, while on the section from Ada Ciganlija to the Sava Square, the number of passengers will exceed 9,000 during the same period.

The two busiest sections on the line will be between Block 18 and the Sava Square stations with more than 8,000 passengers during the morning peak hour.

For the third line, a total of around 24,600 passengers are estimated during the morning peak hour, and on the busiest section around 6,100 passengers per direction.

Public access to the plan will last until October 22. The preparation of the documentation has been entrusted to the Belgrade Urban Planning Institute, while the contracting authority is the Belgrade Metro and Train Public Utility Company.
