The electric vehicle market in Europe accounts for almost 16%, and electric vehicles are still not being adopted as quickly as they should in Serbia, is the conclusion of the panel on decarbonization held at the RES SERBIA 2025 conference, whose media sponsor is the eKapija portal.

Among the reasons for this are the lack of infrastructure, strategy, but also the unregulated import of used vehicles, pointed out Aleksandra Djurdjevic, CEO of Delta Auto Group.

– All vehicles that cannot be imported in Europe can be imported to Serbia. The sale of electric vehicles becomes meaningless if we import the biggest polluters – said Djurdjevic.

State incentives

State incentives are very important for the development of the electric vehicle industry in our country, reminds Djurdjevic.

– The situation with the sale of electric vehicles is better, but it has to be even better. We are working on educating the market, but without the state and a strategy and serious help, it is not possible. There is no country where you can start selling electric vehicles without subsidies – says Djurdjevic.

She points out that subsidies have been in place in Serbia for several years and are decent.

– The amount is stimulating, EUR 5,000 for electric vehicles, but the budget needs to be increased and the process simplified. Among the challenges is the discontinuity that is happening now, we find out too late that the funds earmarked for subsidies were spent – emphasizes Djurdjevic.

Accelerated electrification

She adds that greater acceptance of electric vehicles would also occur by introducing other types of incentives.

– For anyone living in the city center, it would mean that they could park their electric car for free. Eliminating or reducing tolls is one way – said Aleksandra Djurdjevic.

According to her, electric vehicles are the most important topic of the decarbonization industry.

– The deadline for banning the sale of internal combustion vehicles is approaching. Manufacturers are under great pressure, but the problem is not to produce electric vehicles, but how they will be used – says Aleksandra Djurdjevic.

She reminds that batteries for electric vehicles are becoming more affordable and efficient, and chargers are getting faster.

– The question is when in the near future the production of electric vehicles will be equal to the production of vehicles with traditional engines. Manufacturers are also developing hydrogen, but the direction the world is taking is this, accelerated electrification awaits us – concludes Djurdjevic.

Sustainable development and decarbonization

Sinisa Janjusevic, Managing Director for Serbia at Interenergo, tells companies that it is necessary to consider decarbonization.

– Decarbonization is very worthwhile, both in terms of investment, energy savings, and marketing. There will come a time when young people will not want to buy products that are not green. We must respect the principles of the Sustainable Development Goals and value them in projects – warns Janjusevic.
