Elektroprivreda Srbije, TENT branch, has submitted to the Ministry of Environmental Protection a request for determining the scope and contents of an environmental impact assessment study of the reconstruction of the combustion system to the end of reducing the emission of nitrous oxides (“DeNOx”) by primary measures and the replacement of parts of the pipe system of the boiler at the block B2 of the Thermal Power Plant Nikola Tesla B in Obrenovac.

This pertains to the modernization of the boiler, which was installed by the RAFAKO company back in the 1980s, in order to improve energy efficiency, extend the life cycle of the facility and considerably reduce harmful gas emissions.

The planned works entail the installation of eight new jet coal combustors with a low NOx emission, the introduction of two new levels of jets for additional combustion (OFA1 and OFA2), as well as the replacement of the current air mix canals, secondary and cooling air canals, de-clinker facility, compensator and ash funnels. All the works will be carried out within the existing facility, without changing its dimensions.

The new system envisages for the emission of nitrous oxides to be lowered to below 200 mg/m3 (at O2=6%), which is in line with the regulations of the European Union and the obligations from the National Emission Reduction Plan (NERP). As a reminder, NOx concentrations in combined waste gases of both blocks B1 and B2 amounted to 403 mg/m3, which is more than twice as much as the proscribed threshold.

The modernization of the boiler at the block B2 is a continuation of the process of harmonizing the operations of the thermal power plants of EPS with the European environmental standards, which is a prerequisite for their continued operations past 2027. The project is expected to secure fully controlled combustion with a greater degree of usage, as well as a considerable reduction of the negative impact on air quality.

TENT B, with two blocks with an installed power of 2x665 MW, is one of the pillars of the stability of the electrical energy system of Serbia. Annually, more than 11 million tons of the Kolubara lignite is combusted at the power plant.

U dosadašnjem radu blokovi TENT B postavili su gotovo sve rekorde u proizvodnji, dužini neprekidnog rada, satnom iskorišćenju, osnovnim pokazateljima efikasnosti i ekonomičnosti eksploatacije. (www.eps.rs/2025)
