The Ministry of Mining and Energy has signed two memorandums of cooperation in the field of nuclear energy and hydrogen with the South Korean company Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power (KHNP). The aim of the memorandum in the field of nuclear energy is to support the Ministry of Mining and Energy in the development and training of personnel in Serbia in the field of nuclear technologies and to facilitate the exchange of technical information and expertise between the two parties, the ministry said in a statement, as reported by Beta. It was stated that the second, the memorandum of cooperation in the field of hydrogen, would enable joint work on assessing the potential for the development of green hydrogen pilot projects in Serbia through technical exchange and support for human resource development, as well as the exchange of knowledge related to the management of the full hydrogen cycle and supply chain.

The memorandums were signed by the State Secretary at the Ministry, Sonja Vlahovic, and the CEO of the company, Whang Joo-ho, as part of the Korean-Serbian Forum for Strategic Energy Development, which was held in Belgrade, organized by the Ministry and the Korea Trade and Investment Promotion Agency.

Vlahovic assessed that Serbia was considering nuclear energy as one of the potential energy sources, which would contribute to ensuring the country’s energy security in the process of transitioning to clean energy sources.

– It is very important for us to develop cooperation with countries and companies that are leaders in the world in the field of nuclear technologies, to exchange knowledge and experience and to invest in the development of our experts. We are also very interested in the opportunities offered by hydrogen technologies and together with partners from South Korea we will consider potential pilot projects – she said.

Whang Joo-ho emphasized that the established cooperation would enable sustainable growth for Serbia and the company KHNP.

– We especially expect that demonstration projects in the field of hydrogen will play a key role in the development of the hydrogen industry in Serbia. In addition, the agreement will open up new opportunities for cooperation in the clean energy sector in a broader sense – he stated.

The memorandum in the field of nuclear energy stipulates, as stated, that the South Korean company KHNP will provide support in the development of a training program for personnel in the ministry and other state institutions, faculties and companies, which would cover various aspects of nuclear technologies, safety and the regulatory framework. It was also stated that the establishment of a mechanism for the regular exchange of technical information, research results and best practices in the field of nuclear energy was envisaged.

The forum was also attended by representatives of Hyundai Engineering in Serbia and representatives of other Serbian energy companies, and potential cooperation regarding renewable energy projects in Serbia was discussed.

Also, as part of the Korean-Serbian Forum for Strategic Energy Development, a seminar was held at which representatives of the Ministry presented the main goals and planned activities from the Energy Development Strategy of Serbia until 2040, the statement says.
