As it is added, the projects for the construction of the aforementioned tunnels envisage the use of TBMs (machines, popularly known as “mole”) for deep excavations, and during the execution of works on long traffic and sewage tunnels, as well as at the construction sites of accompanying facilities, a large amount of material is created from the excavation, the volume of which can be several million m3.
– The quality of this material depends on the geological base itself, but it can also have a changed composition due to the addition of additives, which is the case when excavation is carried out with a TBM in unstable rock material, and when the addition of foam and additives plasticizes the material. The production of such a large amount of excavated material creates new challenges when it comes to its further use in construction (hydrotechnical spatial planning) or permanent disposal in designated landfills. The study should optimally define the procedures for dealing with the excavated material generated during the construction of Belgrade tunnels, using world experience and of course in accordance with domestic legislation – it is stated in documentation.
The study, as stated, should identify credible concepts for the management of excavated materials, so that excavated material is viewed primarily as a resource in construction, and not waste, and at the same time the study should consider projects in which technical solutions for hydrotechnical spatial planning are provided, such as additional filling, reclamation or upgrading of existing water protection systems.
– In this way, timely planning and securing of locations for further use or disposal of materials can bring significant savings in the implementation of the project, especially when it comes to transport costs. The study should analyze the problems and solutions of excavation and disposal of materials, and ultimately adjust the dynamics of excavation of materials with their disposal – the documentation notes.
The study should also provide recommendations and guidelines for the efficient and proper management of excavated material, detailed enough to be used in subsequent design phases, i.e. to serve as guidance and preparation of technical and planning documentation.
– Handling of excavated material, within projects for whose implementation requires backfilling (urbanization, hydrotechnical facilities, roads) can be financially profitable (reduction of double transport costs), if the locations are located at a reasonable distance. Given that large infrastructure development projects and the expansion of urban areas are financed by the state, the financial effects on the budget are reflected in the savings of funds, which consequently creates positive socio-economic effects – the documentation states.
As added, one of the advantages of using excavated material is environmental protection.
– During the excavation of tunnel roads, a large amount of excavated material is formed and its reuse should be preferred, since the negative impacts due to the creation of landfills of this material generally include the degradation of rural areas, potential impacts on nature and wildlife, as well as a potential reduction in the quality of life of surrounding residents – the documentation states.
