Representatives of the Ministry of Mining and Energy talked with representatives of the Elektroprivreda Srbije (Electric Power Company of Serbia) and contractors about the construction of two ETD systems (excavator-transporter-disposer) for the "Radljevo" surface mine, as well as the activities being carried out on the construction of the ETD system for the "Polje E" surface mine, the Ministry reported.
At the meeting, the current level of implementation of these capital projects was analyzed, critical points were identified and ways to overcome them were discussed. The representatives of the Ministry reminded of the strategic importance of project implementation, especially in the context of increasing the capacity for exploitation of overburden, which is a prerequisite for a stable and long-term supply of coal to thermal power plants.
A special emphasis was placed on the dynamics of the work on the surface mine "Radljevo", with emphasis on honoring the agreed deadlines, so that the new systems would operational during the next year - the announcement states. It was established that the import of coal has been significantly reduced, because, since the beginning of the year, 55 percent less has been imported than compared to the same period in 2023; during the overhaul season in the mining sector, EPS had over 1.6 million tons of coal in landfills. At the same time, the goal is to provide long-term sufficient quantities of coal for the thermal power plants in Obrenovac, by opening the new "Radljevo" mine. All activities in the upcoming period will be focused on providing technological and infrastructural preconditions for smooth exploitation, the parties concluded at the meeting.
The total value of the construction of two ETD systems at the "Radljevo" mine is EUR 180 million. Their commissioning in 2026 should enable additional production of overburden in the amount of 16 to 19 million cubic meters per year, thus creating the necessary conditions for coal exploitation, the announcement stated.
