World record: Evergreen orders most expensive container ships ever

Orders were split between South Korea and China, whereby Hanwha Ocean undertakes the construction of six vessels, and CSSC Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) the rest, splash247 reported.

Hanwha Ocean reported to the Korea Stock Exchange that the six ships cost USD 267.3 million each, for what analysts at Alpha-liner believe is the highest price ever negotiated for the construction of a container ship, given that the price per container space is USD 11,138 (USD/TEU).

Splash reminds that the prices of new construction started to jump in 2020 and continued to grow in one of the most profitable decades for transportation. Nevertheless, the fact shows that this is the most expensive investment in the sector that the Evergreen order is worth more than $100 million per vessel, compared to the $164 million price that Hapag-Lloyd agreed to pay in late 2020 for a batch of six (later 12) LNG-powered megaships, also to the Hanwha company.
