(Zafiris Lapadaridis) For almost 35 years, Hyatt Regency Belgrade has been one of the most luxurious hotels in Serbia and one of the hotels that is recognizable for its superior service and approach to guests, their wishes and needs. Employees also play a significant role in the reputation of Hyatt Regency Belgrade.

It is known that for years the Hyatt Regency Belgrade hotel and especially since Mr. Zafiris Lampadarids was appointed as the general manager of this hotel, takes care of the well-being, development and improvement of each member of his team, which is ultimately reflected in the attitude and approach towards guests.

You have stated at one time that you believe that taking care of your employees is crucial to realizing their full potential and professional advancement. Why do you think that insisting on this is crucial for the modern hotel industry?

- I deeply believe that taking care of employees is key to the success of the organization
because they are the ambassadors of the hotel and those who make the first contact with guests. Through daily open communication with employees, I try to be knowledgeable about the way they think and work, the challenges they face and their routines. In the modern hotel industry, where the expectations of guests are constantly evolving, only a team that feels heard, supported and valued can provide authentic service.

When I am personally informed about the wishes of the employees and the direction in which they aspire to develop I try to create an environment together where they can realize their full potential. In addition to this, as part of an ongoing effort to improve the working environment, we have implemented a survey that is carried out at the key stages of onboarding - after 7, 30 and 90 days of employment. The survey is intended to gather feedback from new employees about their experiences at the hotel. These systems have proven extremely successful because they increase the satisfaction and motivation of the latter, which contributes to their personal growth and goal fulfillment. When people feel good in their work environment, they transfer that feeling to their guests as well — and that`s what I believe makes the difference between an average experience and an exceptional one.

When we talk about your vision and philosophy regarding the business and service provided by the highest category hotels, you also pointed out that, in your opinion, business in this area relies on three pillars, namely clients, founders and employees. We are aware that in many business niches managers and owners try to make savings wherever possible, including when it comes to employees. On the contrary, you insist that investing in people is the most important thing in your business. How does the Hyatt Regency Belgrade invest in its employees and, on the other hand, how does that investment return when it comes to hotel business?

- Investment in people is the most valuable and safest investment, as its return is reflected not only in business results, but also in the satisfaction of everyone involved - clients, founders and employees. We therefore strive to continuously invest in their well-being,
development and motivation through various initiatives and benefits. I strive to promote the values of a healthy lifestyle in the team through my example, because I believe that physical health plays a key role in maintaining productivity and a good mental state. With the aim of improving the mental and physical health of employees, they have at their disposal a modern gym for employees within the hotel. In addition to this, psychological support has been available to employees for several years now. Employees who feel that their health, development and well-being are valued, they naturally show a higher level of commitment, loyalty and enthusiasm in their work.

I consider team building extremely important when it comes to connecting people and building a positive atmosphere. They are an opportunity to strengthen the team spirit, build mutual trust. For this reason, we have expanded the concept of team bonding, including our employees in sports events such as the Belgrade Marathon and Serbia Business Run, but also through the organization of a traditional, annual gala celebration, where we celebrate the successes, efforts and dedication of each team member.
One of the activities that stood out in our management team`s work was rafting as well as other programs, which encouraged us to collaborate in a different environment, we rely on each other and additionally strengthen mutual relations. Such activities had a positive impact on each team individually, encouraging better communication and cooperation in daily business.

Whether we`re running, rowing or celebrating together, each of these moments contributes to a stronger connection and motivation, which is directly reflected in the atmosphere in the hotel, but also in the service we provide. Our vision is clear — by investing in people, we build a strong team and set standards for sustainable and successful business, while simultaneously inspiring the wider business community to recognize the importance of employee care.

Nowadays, it seems, more than ever before it is important to find quality people who will improve the business, which is the case with the hotel industry as well. What are the challenges that Hyatt Regency Belgrade faces when it comes to finding a quality workforce and how does it overcome them, what models do you apply to overcome these challenges?

- It is true that in recent years we have been facing challenges in finding quality workforce, given the great competition and demand in the hotel industry. Through the internship fair, "Hyatt builds a career for young people", we offer a four-month professional internship to students and strive to develop young talents, thereby enabling their professional development and recognizing their potential for future work in the hotel.

Our Human Resources team is constantly adapting our recruiting and talent matching practices. The authentic selection process, where, through interactive tasks and open dialogue during selection, we got the opportunity to better understand the thoughts, ambitions and expectations of the candidates, proved to be extremely productive. We discovered new perspectives and fresh ideas and successfully approached future professionals.

For a long time now, both in Serbia and abroad, quality workforce has been found, among others, at employment fairs and internship fairs. However, even these fairs have been transformed since their inception, they are no longer reduced to the classic philosophy of the law of supply and demand, but increasingly both employers and job seekers are trying to recognize each other`s specific requirements and needs. When it comes to connecting with educated young people, how important are these fairs for you and why?

-Career fairs and internship fairs are much more than an opportunity to fill positions — they are an important bridge between the education system and the labor market. They enable us to connect directly with young, educated people, to understand their ambitions and expectations, but also to bring them closer to the values and culture of our business.

We believe that this type of networking helps young people to make informed decisions about their careers and to recognize employers who nurture authentic values and provide support in their professional growth. For us, it`s an opportunity to build a long-term relationship with future talent, to work together to create an inspiring and stimulating work environment.

- For years, employer branding has been equally important in many areas of business, including in the hotel industry, apart from finding quality team members.
Insisting on this is something that Hyatt Regency Belgrade seems to be particularly known for in the hotel industry. What does your employer branding concept include?

- We are guided by the fact that our employees are the heart of our business and the key to our success. That`s why employer branding for us is much more than attracting talent — it`s about creating a healthy work environment where every team member feels heard, valued and supported in their professional development.

Our employer branding concept is based on clear values: care for employees, continuous education, transparent communication and promotion of a culture of belonging. We organize various training and mentoring programs after carefully listening to the wishes of employees. We are proud to offer an opportunity for development not only within their department, but also other departments through professional training. By doing so, we strive to discover and develop their new talents.
Our goal is for the hotel to remain recognized as a place where people want to work, not only for the professional opportunities, but also for the sense of belonging and support they receive, because we know that a strong team is the foundation of any successful hotel.

In one lecture, you told students to imagine that they were being served by a robot, not a human, in a hotel. Modern technologies and artificial intelligence have become an indispensable part of business in many industries, including the hotel industry. But where, in your opinion, is the limit for someone who has been in the hotel industry for years, but also as someone whose education leans on robotics and automation? What are the advantages of new technologies that must be used in hotel business, and where is a person indispensable in that story and why? When we talk about new trends in the hotel industry, what do you currently recognize as what those trends bring, and to which the Hyatt Regency Belgrade hotel, as a hotel of the highest category, should and must adapt in order to, as before, continue to provide top-notch service to its guests?

- Contemporary trends in the hotel industry are increasingly highlighting the importance of sustainable business and the implementation of the latest technologies, which I consider to be key for the future and something we are fully committed to. Today, guests particularly value hotels that operate responsibly, care for the environment and support the local community. Modern technologies and artificial intelligence are playing a key role in improving efficiency and sustainability. Over the past years, we have successfully implemented automated systems for managing energy consumption, as well as advanced waste management systems, which enable sorting and recycling, thus reducing the hotel`s ecological footprint.

While technology contributes to efficiency, cost reduction and sustainability, I believe that the human factor still plays an irreplaceable role in the provision of services. Guests continue to appreciate warm human contact, empathy and personalized service. In situations that require creativity and emotional interaction, it is people who can provide what technology cannot. Our goal is to keep up with the latest technologies, but also to maintain the human dimension in the process which is crucial for success in our industry.

The initiatives that we are actively implementing are not only a response to the current market demands, but part of our long-term strategy — to deliver an authentic, sustainable guest experience that reflects how modern hotels should operate today and in the future.
